How to Make a Pom Pom

  1. Assemble the Pom Pom Maker

Place the two halves of the pom pom maker together so that the raised circles nestle neatly into the opposite holes. This creates the base for wrapping.

  2. Start Wrapping

Begin wrapping your yarn around one side (one semi-circle) of the pom pom maker. You can secure the starting end with a small knot, or simply hold it in place with your finger as you wrap.

  3. Keep Wrapping!

Continue wrapping the yarn until that side is covered in a thick, even layer. The fuller you make it, the fluffier your pom pom will be—just be sure not to overdo it, or it may become tricky to close.

  4. Wrap the Other Side

Move your yarn to the second half of the maker and repeat the process, wrapping until it's evenly covered.

  5. Close and Secure

Bring both sides together and clip them shut using the white fasteners. If your pom pom is extra full, you can use a bulldog clip or peg to help hold it tightly closed. Once closed, you can cut the end of your working yarn.

  6.  Cut the Loops

Using sharp scissors, begin cutting the yarn loops along the edge of the maker, right between the two plastic halves. Start with small snips until your scissors can slide in easily, then continue cutting all the way around.

  7.  Secure the Pom Pom

Take a strong piece of yarn and wrap it tightly around the center of the pom pom - along the groove where you made your cuts. Wrap it once or twice tightly, then tie to secure, and repeat. This is the tie that holds all of the strands into your pom pom so ensure it is secure. Using a different colour of yarn for this tie can be helpful if you are just starting out.

  8.  Remove the Pom Pom Maker

Unclip and gently pull apart the two halves of the pom pom maker. You might spot a stray loop or two, snip these before separating the halves completely.

  9. Trim & Finish

Fluff up your pom pom and use your scissors to trim any uneven strands, shaping it into a neat, round ball. Leave the securing yarn tails long if you plan to attach it to a beanie or accessory or trim them off if preferred.
