Collection Reveal: Spring Cotton 8 ply pattern names inspired by Aussie Women

We’re excited to unveil our latest collection of knitting and crochet patterns, crafted especially for our new limited edition Spring Cotton 8 ply yarn.

When looking for names for these patterns, we reflected on our customers and our team, who are largely female. So as a proudly Australian business, we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight significant female figures from our past and into current day.. From sportspeople to activists, each of these patterns has been named after a significant woman in Australian history. We look forward to continuing to use our inspiring women in naming our patterns.

Whether you're excited to work with our limited edition yarn, or interested in the impressive women who’ve inspired the pattern names, we hope you’ll find this collection both inspiring and engaging.

The 'Sam' V Neck Tee - PT 8667

Named for: Samantha Kerr

Samantha Kerr OAM is one of Australia’s most celebrated soccer players, known for her impressive goal-scoring record and leadership on the field. Born in Perth, Sam gained global recognition as the captain of the Matildas during the 2023 Women’s World Cup (Go The Tillies!). We feel her skill and determination has made her a standout figure in Australian sports.

The 'Sam' V Neck Tee pattern is a versatile tee that can be dressed up or down. Shown here in Spring Cotton 8 ply Flamingo and Salsa, we think it would look pretty great in Matildas green and gold!

The 'Miles' Top - PT 8668

Named for: Stella Miles Franklin

Stella Miles Franklin (1879–1954) was a trailblazing writer whose work, My Brilliant Career, vividly reflected rural Australia and the pursuit of female independence. Her innovative storytelling has left a lasting impact on Australian literature and we’ve been particularly inspired by her achievements in getting published when it was very much a ‘man’s world’.

The 'Miles' Top is designed to inspire young adventurers aged 2-12. It’s both stylish and comfortable, featured here in Spring Cotton 8 ply shade Electric Blue. This top is perfect for kids ready to make their own mark, with its practical design that's a perfect base for your creativity and additions like embroidery, colourwork, and more.

The 'Nancy' Tee - PT 8669

Named for: Nancy Wake

Nancy Wake's bravery during World War II left an indelible mark on history. Born in New Zealand, Wake moved to Sydney as a child and embraced her Australian identity throughout her life as a globe-trotting journalist and nurse. During World War II, she became a key operative in the French Resistance, even earning the nickname "White Mouse" from the Gestapo. Her extraordinary courage and resourcefulness in the face of danger have made her a hero in Australia and worldwide.

The 'Nancy' Tee is a tribute to her fearless spirit and timeless style, featuring a vintage-inspired design with an engaging all-over texture. It looks stunning in Spring Cotton 8 ply shade Rich Rose – the perfect vintage dusty rose. Or try Sunshine for a bright, Spring staple! Size up for a relaxed, modern fit or pair it with an A-line skirt and pearls for a nod to Nancy’s 1940s elegance.

The 'Stella' Lace Tank - PT 8670

Named for: Stella Young

Stella Young (1982–2014) was an Australian disability activist, comedian, and journalist known for her relentlessly unapologetic work for disability rights. She consistently challenged stereotypes and promoted inclusivity through her speaking, writing, and online activism. Young’s unique voice and commitment to disability advocacy continue to challenge attitudes to disability in Australia and worldwide.

The 'Stella' Lace Tank is a stunning design with an all-over lace texture that's perfect for those who want to make a statement in bright shades of Spring Cotton 8 ply like Electric Blue or Peach Pink.

The 'Nova' Throw - PT 8671

Named for: Nova Peris

Born in Darwin, Nova Peris first made history as the first Australian Aboriginal woman to win Olympic Gold, as part of the Hockeyroos at the 1996 Olympic Games. She later moved into politics and served as Senator for the Northern Territory. More recently, she has continued her activism in other ways, including founding the Nova Peris Girls Academy in the Kimberley to support young women’s education.

The 'Nova' Throw is a basketweave blanket with a gorgeous texture in bouncy Spring Cotton. We can't promise it will keep you warm during a season of 'Survivor' (did you know Nova was a participant in 2019?) but it's sure to add some style and cheer to your Spring decor in shades like Sunshine or Grasshopper!

The 'Edith' Top - PT 8673

Named for: Edith Cowan

Another of Australia's great activists, Edith Cowan (1861-1932) was the first woman elected to an Australian parliament. She championed social reforms, particularly in education and women's rights, and was a driving force behind the establishment of the Children’s Court of Western Australia. Cowan's pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for future generations of women in politics.

Did you know that Edith Cowan was known for knitting and crocheting during her time in Parliament? We're not sure if she would have worn our 'Edith' Top in Pale Peach (perhaps a little TOO modern for her!), but it’s great to know that knitting & crocheting during long meetings has a long and notable history!
